How do I get my Samsung Galaxy S5 working again?

Hi. I was on my phone earlier on this afternoon and I went onto the Snapchat app. When I did this, the screen on my phone went completely black and has now become unresponsive. I have tried pushing the on/off putting and holding it in but this has had no effect. I have tried pushing the home button on the bottom of the phone but this has had no effect either. I have read that taking the battery out then putting it back in can resolve this problem by resetting the phone but I dont want to do that if I can help it. So does anyone know of any other ways that I can get my phone back working again? Many thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! Pulling the battery won't erase anything--it just forces the phone to power down. So pull the battery for 10 seconds, then put it back in, and power it back on--does that work?
