Why am I getting the error message Sorry, Google maps has stopped working?

[AC Question]

"Sorry, Google maps has stopped working"

I get this error message once in a while when I've entered a specific address and asked for directions. I can get my location on the map, but the lack of directions to an address I've entered has left me in a really bad position a couple of times. What's going on? Why does it work perfectly sometimes, yet deliver this scary message other times?

Try Settings, Apps, swipe to All, scroll to Maps, and select Clear Cache.
