I have a Galaxy S4-How can I tell if a text I sent has actually been read?

I don't think you will find one. FaceBook and a few other apps offer this feature but the key is that both you and the receiver are using the same app. With SMS everyone has so many choices that most of us are using different apps for the same function, and while SMS apps can receive data from the network about delivery status the network doesn't track when an item is open or read. If knowing the status of being read or unread on the receiver's end is important to you, and the receiver agrees, there may be an app like Tango that would allow you to see message status. Again though you both have to be using the same app, and apps like Tango do not send messages to users that do not use the app. Similar to FB Messenger.
