How do I stop a continuous wifi connection on my Nexus 7?

Nexus 7 continuous WiFI access, as if downloading huge programs

The last few months I have noticed my wifi router engaged in prolonged and non-stop internet access. When I check my running apps, I cannot find any app running. I can open an app that let's me close all running processes, and that stops the router from flashing immediately. I don't know which process is doing this -- there are many running. I can actually feel my Nexus get warm if I don't stop the access, and my battery is draining. Running Battery Doctor and optimizing does not stop the heavy drain. Any idea what is going on? I have also run virus checkers that find nothing.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you saying that the tablet's wi-fi is always on, and seems to be constantly using data? Go to Settings>Data Usage, and look at the details there. What app is using the most data?

You could also consider toggling the wi-fi off when you don't really need it.
