Logging out of gmail assocated with phone

I have a gmail account that I set up only because you have to have one for Google Play on Android phones, but I don't use it as my personal email address. I have now set up a gmail account for a project I'm working on and will need to check it periodically, so I would like to log into it on my phone and leave it logged in so that I will get notifications of new emails. However, will this mess up my Google Play ordering abilities, since it's not the account associated with the phone?

You can have more than one Google account in your phone and switch between them in all Google apps with no problem. You can receive notifications and check both accounts through your Gmail app and this won't change your login in the Play Store.

After material design all Google apps will let you switch between accounts from the side menu. This will affect just that specific app. You can even change the sync settings individually.
