How do I get the audio to work when using Google Maps?

I am learning how to use the GPS on my phone through Google Maps, but can't hear any sound. I tried pushing the microphone icon and it says "listening" like it's waiting for me to say something. I just want to hear the step by step directions so I don't have to keep looking down at my phone, causing an unsafe driving situation!!
