How do you use a % symbol when searching contacts?

When searching my contacts I wanted to see what kinds of wildcards are used, if any. The "%" sign definitely affects results in a restrictive way (that is it often reduces then number of contacts found but I've yet to get it to increase the number). I cannot figure out what it is doing though. Anyone know of a reference guide on characters that do things in android?
