Why no sound when I plug in ear phones?

New phone first time with ear phones. Do I need to do more than just plug them in?

Welcome to AC.

You certainly need to plug them right in....the last millimetre or two often offers a high resistance. If you've done that and no go, and tried other earphones without success, the device may be faulty.
