They won't light up anymore or they never lit up? What usually causes these to light, if they light, is a small sensor on the front of the device usually near the front facing camera. Often the issue is they won't turn off and this can be caused when this sensor becomes dirty and no longer sees light and dark correctly. This sensor or one very near it also controls screen brightness and screen lock when the device is being used as a phone. Even small amounts of makeup or sweat can affect the function of this sensor. As for not correctly confirming the buttons it could be that this sensor is dirty and had no reference for light and dark and as a protection measure has timed the lights out so that they don't stay on continuously. Two things to do, first clean these sensors or sensor, and then cover it in a lit environment. Does the screen dim, do the lights come on? If the screen dims, assuming you are using auto brightness which if you are not you should turn on for these tests, but the buttons don't light up then you are most likely looking for a setting. With all of these devices being the same but different this setting could be in a variety of places and may come down to you just fumbling though each menu looking for it. It would like be something like, capacitive buttons xxxxx, and may be a simple toggle or have choices. It may be under battery, personalize, display, or even security.
