motorola moto g 3rd generation possible to view deleted files without rooting?

I hate to have zillions of old text messages on my phone and I delete most after reading. However recently I deleted a bunch of text messages and I now realize I should have kept them as they had instructions my brother sent me. Is there any way to - I don't even care about recovering them to the phone - at least view them so I can make a note of the instructions without having to confess to my brother I didn't save them? More to the point is there any way to do so without rooting? Even if I have to get a program on my computer to do it it's fine.I"m already branded as the joke of the family for not paying attention to things, I really would prefer to do this without them finding one more way to make fun of me.
