Is there a visible way to show voicemails

I don't know when I receive a voice mail- until I open the app and look

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Are you talking about a Visual Voicemail app? If you don't use Visual Voicemail, try uninstalling it or disabling it, then see if the Phone app gives you notifications of voicemails.
