how to get past the "this device was reset" screen on my s7 edge

my fone was stolen on my bday, its a s7 edge. i never was able to set it up, i didnt even get to open the box. well thanx to a few determined family members we tracked it down. But now i cant do anything w it cuz when we got it my friend who thinks he knows it all tried to reset it with out my permission and now it says "this device was reset to continue sign in w a google account that was previously synced on this device". The kid who stole it is denying it all and will not give us any info. Is there any way to get past this. verizon dont believe me toi think cuz they say they cant help me
