How do I keep my screen from randomly opening apps/typing?

What ever app is in the middle left region of the phone opens on its own and if the keyboard is open it will type Aaaaaaa until I turn the phone off. This is not an every day occurance but when it does occur it renders the phone unusable. I have tried soft and hard reseting. I have taken the battery out for thirty minuts at a time. I have removed the back cover for added ventilation though I can't really say if this helps or not.
