Checking if my unlock has worked and changing My Phone Number in Status page

Friend from the States gave me her old AT&T Galaxy S4 last year when she
upgraded. Basically was using it as a tiny wifi tablet for the past year, but now that my flip phone is dying I'm going to get a SIM card from a Canadian carrier and hopefully use it with this phone.

Followed the unlock instructions here:

Phone rebooted, but as I don't have a SIM yet (still looking at offers) I'm not quite sure how to check if it's actually unlocked.

1) Is there a way to see if it's actually unlocked without a SIM?
2) Her U.S. number still shows up in Status "My Phone Number". Should it?
Will that change when I get a SIM.

Appreciate any answers as if it's not unlocked I guess I'll have to check the Cyber Monday sales.

Thanks.

It probably is locked. You are probably going to have ro buy an unlock code on line. Trying another sim will confirm whether it is locked. Trouble is it won't work that well in Canada. Check out willmyphonework.net. No, the number in settings won't change. It makes no difference to the phone.

Why do you think it's still locked?

According to that site you gave, it will work on the 850 & 1900 bands. According to an email from my current provider "The device must be HSPA (or UMTS) and 850 MHz and 1900 MHz compatible."

Thanks.
