Restore contacts from broken device

Your contacts should be synced to your Google account. Log in to contacts.google.com to see if they show up there. If they're there, they will populate when you log in to your new device.

As for the texts, you may have some trouble with that one.
 
Welcome to Android Central! hallux is correct, as long as you actually saved your contacts to your Google account, as opposed to the local Phone account. The Google account contacts automatically sync to your Google Contacts in the cloud, which is why I always strongly recommend doing this. The local Phone account contacts don't sync anywhere automatically, which means you have to make sure you regularly back them up manually, using some 3rd party program.

Local Phone account contacts and SMS messages are stored in SQLite database files in a protected system directory, which means you'd have a lot of difficulty retrieving them.
