Deleted email account still trying to connect

I had another email account (non Gmail) connected to my Gmail app and I recently removed it. However, the Gmail app still appears to be attempting to log in to it. I am getting an error message that says "Authentification error while connecting to your....(can't see the rest). How do I get this to stop? I have checked my app settings and only have my Gmail account listed.

Besides the settings in the Gmail app itself, have you double-checked that it's also no longer listed in your phone settings under "Accounts"?
