Google Play service won't work untill I update please help

If you have the cheaper, low storage TRIBUTE, it's simple. DO NOT update. That message is not true; I've been using the few programs I'm able to store on my bare bones phone, with NO problem. The minute I update, I lose Maps and everything I need. Don't do it!
