Why is my phone not letting me lock the screen?

It says that I supposedly have placed a lock for the screen yet everytime I attempt to open it after pressing the power key it just says "swipe to unlock" and it's open. How do I keep this from happening or how do I fix this?

Welcome to Android Central! Which device? Check your settings to see how long your Automatically Lock interval is. If it's a long interval (like 15 minutes), then the screen won't lock until 15 minutes after it's gone to sleep.
