Optimise usage of SD-card memory easily?

AC Question

I started to get messages about memory being full, so bought a 16GB micro-SD card & installed it.
I formatted it OK & assumed the S4-mini would then handle all the available storage space.
But the messages continued & I was unable to download maps I wanted (for the Maps.me app).

I found that under "Settings > More > Application Manager > MAPS.ME > storage" I could select "Move to SD card" so did that.
Still no good.
With a lot more digging, I found that within the Maps.me app, under Download Maps, I could choose to download to SD card & that worked OK.

Trying to clear more space in the Device memory, I Tried "Settings > More > App Manager > Menu > Sort by size" aiming to shift big apps to SD card, but on most apps the option was greyed out.

I went to "Apps > My Files > All files > SD card" which moved my pictures etc OK.

I went to "Internet > Menu > Settings > Content settings > Default storage > Memory card" so I suppose any downloads will now be OK.

Did I really need to do all that?
Do I need to do anything else?
Is there a simpler way do get the S4-mini to handle extra memory without needing to specify all those details?

Thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! Some devices have a system setting to make the SD card the default storage location for certain kinds of app data. But for the most part, you have to go into individual apps to change the default download or storage location (assuming they have that option).
