why doesn't my selfie stick work on my HTC desire 520?

hi,
i got this selfie stick not long ago. it is one of the ones that the cord goes into the headphone jack (not Bluetooth). and when i plug it in and set the volume button to 'capture' it doesn't work. but it works on my samsung tablet and my mum's samsung phone. why, is this just a glitch with my phone or something?

Welcome to Android Central! Headphone jacks can sometimes have slightly different configurations, so there might be some subtle incompatibility. Are you certain the plug is in all the way, and there's no debris in the jack?
