I am in an annoying group chat that is taking up all my texts but I can't find a way to remove myself from it. I don't want to block the people because they are my friends, but I would like to not be part of the group. How can I do this?

The only way to leave the group is to have the group start a new conversation thread without you being in the group membership. This is a limitation of the SMS system.
The new RCS messaging system may help with this, but that is a long way off.
Check the options in your messaging app. Some apps let you put a thread on "mute". The messages still arrive but you get no notifications for that conversation. This is a workaround for the group membership problem.
