Identical version of the Calendar app, but icon behaves differently on phone and tablet - why?

I've recently noticed that the Calendar app icon on the homescreen of my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10 changes daily, displaying the number of the day in the month - so now it's a blue opening page with a white "2" in the centre. Whereas on my HTC 10 phone, running exactly the same version of the app (5.7.35-165431130-release) it always stays the same: a blue opening page with a white "31". Furthermore, the phone is running a later version of Android - 7.0 - while the tablet's still on 6.0.1. I do have the Nova launcher on the tablet, but not aware of having set it, or it being capable, for that level of interaction. I'm intrigued.

Welcome to Android Central! It has to do with the launcher. The Tab S and the HTC 10 use different launchers, and HTC's presumably doesn't have the feature to update the Calendar icon. You can always install a 3rd party launcher like Nova Launcher, which has this feature as well.

Also, the Calendar app on Samsungs are not the same as Calendar apps on othrr phones. Samsung uses a proprietary Calendar app which also syncs to Samsung Cloud.
