why does my internet icon bave a number 4 on it now?

The earth icon on my homepage has a 4 on it now

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? I'm guessing you have a Samsung phone, and you're referring to the Samsung Internet stock browser. I'd also guess that you allowed some websites to give you notifications, so that could explain the unread count badge on the shortcut icon.

Welcome to Android Central! One other possibility is that it's telling you how many open browser tabs you have. If you open the browser, is there a button next to the URL bar with the same number in it?

So how do you get rid of the number over the internet icon

Either go into Settings, find the apps that get badged and disable Internet - or tap Internet (the globe icon with the number) and read any notifications in there. Also pull down the notification bar and see if there are 4 notifications from websites in there. You can swipe each one away, tap it to get to whatever it's for or clear all (at the b ottom of all the notifications).
