Why is my phone's date wrong -- and how can I fix it without messing up my texts?

I have a Galaxy S7, fully updated and everything. The phone had the wrong date, for some reason, displaying tomorrow's date. When I fixed the date, or turned on "Automatic Date and Time," it made it so that I couldn't see any texts I sent or received in the message threads (I could only see them for a second when they came up as notifications.) I read elsewhere that this is a common problem that happens when you change the time on your phone. When I restart and change my phone back to the *incorrect* date, the messages display just fine. How can I have both working messages and the correct date?
