I have an Ascend Mate 2 with a Grey screen and white clock

You can't get out of the screen at all without using the start button. You can swipe one time and the next screen contains in one corner of the phone --still on a gray screen--the battery life and other start up notifications. It seems to happen upon use first thing in the morning and often goes away during the day.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this.? For about 5 minutes it's super annoying.
