Android Central Question

Hi, I downloaded a notification sound from Zedge but it got on my husband's nerves so I tried to uninstall it. After a lot of faffing around, I managed to get rid of it but I don't know what I did, and now I don't get any sound at all for texts & General Notifications is switched to 'No sound'. I think Zedge hijacked my phone because I can't use any of the notification sounds that came with the phone (Galaxy A5 2017). Can anyone help please? Thanks!

So you have all sound except messages?
Download the Textra messenger app and see if you have notification. It won't hurt your phone.
If you have sound, you must have deleted a system file for the stock message app.

Let's rewind a bit -- you already mentioned that you can get to the menu to choose a new notification tone, and it will play a sample for you. After selecting the tone and accepting it, does it still say "No Sound" when you look back at the menu?

Have you also tried using a custom tone? You can use any mp3 file -- just copy it to the /Notifications directory using a file manager.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I chose a sound from zedge (fairydust), which plays a sample sound. In general notifications, when 'importance' is Urgent or high, Fairydust is listed under 'Sound' but when importance is medium or low, under 'importance' it says 'medium: No sound' and 'Low: no sound or visual interruption' respectively. It makes no difference if 'importance' is urgent, high, medium or low - there is no audible sound notification. Does that make sense?:-[

....and thanks, methodman89, the message notification works with Textra and I do remember deleting something.... I have no idea what, but it was in an unfamiliar location & I couldn't tell you where - I was following some online advice! I love Textra BTW!

It sounds like you found a good workaround with Textra. In case you want to keep digging at the underlying problem, see what happens if you go to Settings>Apps, tap Menu, then Reset All App Preferences. I'm wondering if at some point you picked Zedge as the default app to select ringtones from, and something got messed up when you removed Zedge from the phone.

Hi, I reset all app preferences but there's still no sound. I'm pretty sure that I deleted something that I shouldn't have :-[! Do you think a factory reset would solve the problem?
