Hi, I downloaded a notification sound from Zedge but it got on my husband's nerves so I tried to uninstall it. After a lot of faffing around, I managed to get rid of it but I don't know what I did, and now I don't get any sound at all for texts & General Notifications is switched to 'No sound'. I think Zedge hijacked my phone because I can't use any of the notification sounds that came with the phone (Galaxy A5 2017). Can anyone help please? Thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! Go to your system settings for Notifications and choose the option to select a notification tone -- do you see the preinstalled tones listed there, or is the list completely blank? If you see them, then what happens if you select one -- nothing? Does it play a sample for you?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I can see the list of notification sounds and they play a sample when I select them but I'm not getting any sounds for my messages. I'm following this 'path' to check the messages app:

settings - apps - messages - app notifications & it says that app notifications in messages is 'on', but under General Notifications where you would normally have the name of the tone you have selected, it says 'no sound'.

    Does that make sense?!?

On the messages screen in settings, click Importance. Is it showing pop up with sound?

Sorry, I don't know where you mean? I can't see an Importance button?

Did you mean settings - apps - messages?

Go to Settings>Apps, select Messages, and then App Notifications, then Other Notifications. Look for the Importance option there.

Ok, so if you change it to High or Urgent, are you getting the notification tones now?

No sound on either Urgent or High (even though Urgent says - sound & pop up on screen, and High says - make sound).

Go to the volume drop down menu and make sure that all your volume sliders are up.

Have you rebooted lately? You should irregardless, but I'm scratching my head if your settings are what you say. Do you have any audio I. e. Music, or video sounds?

I had the very same issue. I don't know how I resolved the problem. Are you using the priority feature. (If your phone has it) Sometimes it will silence the ringer if you turn the feature on.

See what happens if you wipe the cache partition: https://www.hardreset.info/devices/s...recovery-mode/

Hi, sorry for the long delay..... I was scared to wipe the cache partition! I'm really useless with technology & I was afraid that it would wipe the entire phone or something! Anyway, I followed the tutorial & rebooted but there's still no sound for my text messages. Do you have any other ideas please?

So you have all sound except messages?
Download the Textra messenger app and see if you have notification. It won't hurt your phone.
If you have sound, you must have deleted a system file for the stock message app.

Let's rewind a bit -- you already mentioned that you can get to the menu to choose a new notification tone, and it will play a sample for you. After selecting the tone and accepting it, does it still say "No Sound" when you look back at the menu?

Have you also tried using a custom tone? You can use any mp3 file -- just copy it to the /Notifications directory using a file manager.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I chose a sound from zedge (fairydust), which plays a sample sound. In general notifications, when 'importance' is Urgent or high, Fairydust is listed under 'Sound' but when importance is medium or low, under 'importance' it says 'medium: No sound' and 'Low: no sound or visual interruption' respectively. It makes no difference if 'importance' is urgent, high, medium or low - there is no audible sound notification. Does that make sense?

....and thanks, methodman89, the message notification works with Textra and I do remember deleting something.... I have no idea what, but it was in an unfamiliar location & I couldn't tell you where - I was following some online advice! I love Textra BTW!

It sounds like you found a good workaround with Textra. In case you want to keep digging at the underlying problem, see what happens if you go to Settings>Apps, tap Menu, then Reset All App Preferences. I'm wondering if at some point you picked Zedge as the default app to select ringtones from, and something got messed up when you removed Zedge from the phone.

Hi, I reset all app preferences but there's still no sound. I'm pretty sure that I deleted something that I shouldn't have ! Do you think a factory reset would solve the problem?
