I am using a Motorola G4 Plus with Android 7.0.

I am one of those weird people who prefer to disconnect from the web when I don't need the connection. I have recently noticed that my phone connects on its own to the web through the mobile phone network and downloads small amounts of data, typically around 0,1 MB but sometimes up to 1,6 MB. This happens fairly routinely every three days, shortly past midnight and again shortly after 04.00 the same morning.

These are not regular application updates which are only permitted through wifi, a setting that the phone generally seems to respect. Any ideas concerning what might be going on and how to control it?

You should be able to go to Settings and turn off background data and turn off Sync from the drop down menu.
