Why does a stranger's name (that isn't in my phone) show up as a text contact?

Android Central Question

When I receive a text, another contact will show up under the phone number of the person who texted me. For example:

I got a text from 404-555-1234 and that number is at the top of the screen,
underneath that is the name "Martin Cabrina".

Then I got a text from 770-555-4321 and underneath that number it says "Angie Trent"

I have no idea who Martin or Angie is. This is a brand new phone, I don't have those names in my contact, and it's not the name of the sender of the text.

Nothing happens when I click the face icon (profile) next to the name. And I can "X" it away, but when I exit the text and come back in, the stranger's name shows up it.

Remember, telemarketers (including telemarketing robocallers) spoof their callerID, and some of them are spoofing the caller's name. The callerID number and name no longer means that it's actually that number or that name that's calling or texting you.
