Change system update settings?

Is there any way to either turn off auto update on system updates or at least change what time they chose to install?

We use our phones as alarm clocks and twice now system updates have happened when our alarms are suppose to go of, meaning they didn't because the phone was installing updates and thus we ended up late for work.

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Some phones give the user more control over system update behavior. But in phones that don't have that kind of option, it shouldn't automatically do the system update -- it should still prompt you with a notification and ask if you want to update now or later. (However, if you postpone it enough times, I believe it will force you to update at some point.)
