Next phone should i go Unlocked or Carrier

So ive never really done unlocked phones, usually always carrier branded but now theres no 2yr contracts and i have to pay outright for the phone. No problem, but what are the advantages of unlocked vs carrier?

My next phone will more than likely be the note 10.
