Why does my SD card need to be reformatted at each reboot?

I'm using the Moto X4 with Android 9.0. I updated the security patch level is May 1, 2019.

After the last security patch upgrade, whenever I reboot the phone, I have to reformat the SD card. It works once re-formatted and I can use it for external storage...until the next reboot.

The card itself is only 6 months old. Any ideas?
