Enable Android Wifi Hotspot without data ?

Thanks for responses to my threads. I find pieces to enable /use as Wifi Hotspot/wireless router of Android phones with data plan. This will drain the battery quickly and eat data quickly

Are there ways to use Android Smart phone as WiFi hotspot/Wireless Router without data plan?

I mean I have android smartphone with WiFi connection. I want to enable WiFi hotspot on this phone based on WiFI of phone. This device will act as wireless router for laptop to connect /browse.

Is It feasible ?

No, the phone can route data to USB or WiFi, but it can't route WiFi to WiFi, for that you need a repeater (a router with special firmware, like Tomato or DD-WRT) and another router providing the original WiFi signal for it to repeat. (A hotspot is just using the phone as a router for an existing [not WiFi] internet connection.)

But if you have a WiFi signal, you have no need to use the phone as a hotspot, just connect everything to that WiFi signal. (If you don't have a WiFi signal, the phone isn't going to create one out of nothing. You'll be able to connect to the hotspot, but the hotspot isn't connected to the internet, so all you can do is transfer files from one device on the hotspot to another device on the hotspot. Hotspots don't create connections to the internet, they use existing connections to the internet.)

Here is the background.

I have a work computer that has VPN. We need WiFi to login to VPN. There are some public WiFi that has web authentication. I am not able to use this public WiFi with my work computer, because it is not allowing the web authentication before connecting to VPN.

I am looking to by pass/override this web authentication using Smartphone android hotspot. I will make my work computer to look for my phone hotspot as WiFi (that will not look for web authentication).

See Rukbat's post. There is no point connecting to a hot spot not connected to the net. Seems work has your device locked down for a reason. I suggest you speak to the It people at work.

You can't connect a computer running a VPN to another internet source - that's the whole purpose of the VPN (to keep you from uing any other connection).

If the VPN connection doesn't have internet access, it's because the company doesn't want you accessing the internet while you're at work. If you do, and they find out, they won't just fire you for cause, but any problems they have with their LAN, for years to come, will be laid at your feet ... and courts will go along with that. So you might end up paying them 50% of your income for the rest of your life (and Social Security income isn't exempted).

Don't play games. If the company isn't giving you internet access, save your internet access for when you get our of work. (I worked for a company where one of my people did that - bypassed the VPN to get internet access. That was back around 1995. He's probably still having his paycheck garnisheed.)
