I turned it off completely and when I tried to turn it back on, it said I couldn't use the fingerprint ID, I had to use the knock code. Apparently I've forgotten the code.

Welcome to Android Central! It is normal for most Android devices to periodically ask for the backup PIN/password/pattern, even if the fingerprint sensor is working correctly. When you set up your fingerprint sensor, it should have asked you to create the backup PIN/password/pattern, as well as reminding you that you'll need to use it periodically. You may not have much other option besides doing a factory reset from the recovery menu.
