Android Central Question

Bought a cheap Samsung Galaxy Ace gt s5830i that's got the old Market Play Shop installed. Have updated it to Play Store but it won't open. Done all the usual; clearing cache on there and Play Services, inserted a new sim, re started etc, but no joy.

Is it even possible to run Play Store on such an old device?

Have updated it to Play Store

How did you do this? Did you root the device? Did you install a 3rd-party ROM to update the device to a newer OS? What I'm seeing is that device has a VERY OLD version of Android (2.2 FROYO) that is simply unsupported at this time. You won't get much of anything working on that 8 year old device.

Very old versions of Android are not compatible with modern apps. I think Android 4.4 is probably the oldest version still supported and that will be unsupported soon. I don't think you will find apps that work on it. Sorry.

Welcome to Android Central! An antivirus app won't be helpful against various vulnerabilities that were never patched in 4.4, so it's probably best not to use that phone on a network.
