Desktop mode issue

Hi all, can anyone tell me why certain websites automatically revert to desktop mode despite me having the setting off?
I have to toggle the desktop setting on & off to get back to normal, other browsers are OK.

The way the site is written. There's nothing you can do about it. (It doesn't detect that you're on a phone browser until you switch to it. It should look at the browser you're using [which tells it it's a phone browser] as soon as you connect to it ... but. There's more to developing a website properly [like looking for the browser type before displaying anything] than is taught at coding bootcamps.)

Ok thanks for the swift reply. I just presumed that certain popular websites such as Facebook etc would be ok.
I think the problem arose after the latest Android Pie update on my Pixel XL.
