Problem with microphone on Apex 7.85 tablet

I'm on the road a lot and like to try to keep in touch with my wife and kids using Skype or Google Hangouts. Recently I bought an Apex 7.85 tablet with the hopes of leaving it at home with them so we could use it for video chat. No dice. For some reason neither the microphone nor the speakers will work with either Hangouts or Skype. I've tested the microphone and it works fine with the native sound recorder and the tablet will play sound normally with other applications like the browser. But for whatever reason when you try to run a video chat application the video comes through but it will not play or pick up sound.

I cannot find anywhere to select the microphone as an input device for either Hangouts or Skype. In Hangouts I am selecting the speakers as the output device but am still not getting sound. I do not see anywhere on Skype that will allow me to select the output device.

I don't have much money to throw at a solution and am trying to make this work. Any and all help would be most welcome and appreciated. Here are the specs:

Tablet: Apex 7.85" tablet, model number TM785CH
OS: Android 4.4.2
Skype Version: 5.0.0.51733
Hangouts version: 2.0.128

If there's any further information I can provide please let me know. Thanks much in advance.
 
I am having the same issues with my Apex (same model, etc.). No help from where I purchased it and no help from Google hangouts or Apex either.
