New Gmail format only notifying me of primary emails, not updates or promotions.. how to fix?

As the title says, since Google updated the Gmail app on my phone and added the updates section, I'm only getting notified of primary emails. I have very important emails now going into the new "updates" section Google added that I'm not getting notified about. I've been through the settings and have all the notifications turned on I can find, but still no go.

Any suggestions?

Open Gmail then go settings >click on your account name >notifications

Have you also tried changing the Inbox Type? Go to the Gmail settings and select the specific email account to find that. See if the problem happens with Priority Inbox.
