Why does my phone get louder when I pick it up?

I just got my Galaxy S5, and the volume gets louder when I pick up my phone to answer a call or if I wave my hand over the screen, even though I have the motion option set to pause/mute when the screen is covered. Is there anyway to stop this? Ideally, the volume would get lower when I pick up the phone.

Update: It turns out it's not just when I pick it up. Even if I leave it on my desk when it rings, the first ring is normal, the second ring is super loud, the the third ring is muted, and then it goes through the cycle again.

Are you sure it's not an audio effect? Something muffling the sound a bit, but when you move your hand near it you're directing the sound upward, and when you pick the phone up it's not near what's muffling it? (I always get that when I'm watchting a video in portrait mode and let the bottom of the phone rest on my shirt - the speaker on the Note 3 is on the bottom.)
