Why do I have to close my text messaging app to in order to get the message alert to work again?

why is it that when I receive a txt message I hear it and then when I look at the message there is no more sound when receiving txt message unless I close the app?

This is normal behavior for most stock messaging apps, at least on Lollipop. The rationale is probably that if you Messaging app open to the conversation, you can already see messages coming in.

I've heard that the Verizon Messages app will still give you notifications, even if you're in that conversation. You could also try other 3rd party SMS apps like Textra or Chomp SMS.
