Does tablet encryption prevent functions a user may want to keep

I bought a Viaual Land Prestige Elite 10 QS tablet. I swear it looked like it was not encrypted out of the box, but in doing a reset to factory defaults it encrypted itself. If I power it up, I am asked for no password, I thought encryption would make me enter a password on power up. So what is encryption doing? I can use a SD card in the device, will it encrypt files on the sd card so I can't suffle files between a PC and the tablet? Can't find out anythng

Welcome to Android Central! How do you know it's encrypted if you didn't encrypt it and it's not asking you for a PIN or password?
