Nothing irritates me more when i see this sub $99 devices and even sub $199 devices with bigger screens but pathetic screen resolutions of 1024x800 and only 8 GB of storage. It even irritates me when I see screens with 1280x800. What is the big deal? All screens should be 1080p and storage should be at least 16GB but even so 32GB should be the minimum. We are approaching the middle of the decade and it seems that progress is going backwards in affordability as if you want the higher specs you got to spend nearly a grand if not subsisting or on contract.

I think you are exaggerating. If you remember, 800×480 used to be a tablet resolution.

1280×800 on a tablet is amazing progress.

Why? How do you get the cost of a $300 tablet down to the point that it can retail for $99? Oh, using a cheaper screen and less ROM would be one way.

They need to save costs somewhere.. not so long ago we had 800x600 for computer screens/ I still remember the first time when I had my Imac G5 10 years ago with 20 inch screen and a resolution of 1680 × 1050.. it was really hard to find a nice wallpaper for it because everything was to tiny.

Tell me about it. I still can't believe when you search there is still wallpaper at 800x600 or 1024x768 and it is still a pain to find anything at 2560x1600 unless I put the 2560 at the end of the photo search.

No complaints whatsoever with either the screen res or storage on my Moto G 1st Gen.

720p @ 329 ppi is just fine for me, and unless you're a music/video/gamer nut 16 gig is more than enough for most people.

Yes Moto G is a great budget phone. But my Moto E which is a $99 phone has only 4gb memory which is too low and most annoyingly a freaking fixed focus camera. Who the hell produces fixed focus cameras anymore in 2014? But other than that, its a great phone.

Manufactures or companies of cheap phones or tablets are mostly focusing on people who want these items, but do not justify spending more to get an adequate unit. Cutting corners to save money for the manufacture company, while turning profit by attempting to sell by the quantity if it is possible.

Looking at this turd of a phone.

5" 540 x 980 resolution and 4 GB of storage. My old CRT from 1998 had a higher resolution screen.

What bugs me about this cheap crap phones is the fact that people that don't know about phones are going to buy them because they are cheap, have a big screen but they won't know that they have a low resolution screen and are underperformed.

If it was not for me my mother and father would have gotten one of these phone except instead I persuaded them for a Nexus 5 which I am glad I did before they discounted it. Now that the Nexus line devices cost nearly a grand now what is left in cheap 1080p displays with a least 16GB of storage for phones and tablets any more.
