I never had this problem until recently, lately my tablet's screen is stuck in portrait and it won't rotate at all, I have auto rotate on and tried turning it off and on and nothing. I even factory reset and nothing.Does anyone else have this problem? Is this some bug that can be fixed with an update?

Does it just not rotate on your homescreen, or is the rotation absent no matter what you're doing? Have you tried a reboot? If that didn't work, how about a cache partition wipe? http://forums.androidcentral.com/goo...tion-wipe.html

Sounds like bad accelerometer. You can read about similar issues here https://productforums.google.com/for...us/tvnm-lyyQtE. Look at post by Paul on 12/4. Even though the thread relates to older n7, getting to safe mode is the same. If the problem occurs in safe mode, it may be a hardware (warranty) issue. You may want to try this https://forums.androidcentral.com/e?...token=DbPxC-ch.

It started working again for some reason. I will update if the problem occurs again. Update : now it doesn't work again.

I had this on my last N7 2013 I used an app to manually switch btwn landscape and portrait. pretty annoying but got used to it. I then cracked the tablet in half by accident and it didn't matter. The replacement N7 2013 doesn't have the problem. Try this app if it happens again https://forums.androidcentral.com/e?...token=WtgDAuK8

Every time I shut off the tablet overnight the auto rotate will work again, but it will lock again later on.

Yea get that app and you can leave it on auto for most of the time but when you need it horizontal and it won't leave Vertical it's 'a good hack.

Is it specific applications? In the application manifest you can specific that the application can only be used in specific orientations.

No it's everywhere that auto rotate will turn off and on randomly.

Sounds like the sensor is flaky. It may be time for a repair.

Had same issue and finally realized it was the case causing the problem. After I removed the tight fitting snap on case, the auto rotate worked fine and kept working.

I don't have any cover or case on mine and the auto rotate is flaky. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes a reset fixes it for awhile and sometimes it doesn't. Also the touchscreen will be non-responsive when trying to unlock at times. My wife's Nexus 7 is experiencing the same issues.

I have the same issue, I just turn it off and on again and the feature starts working fine some app or function causes it (my own assumption) as the time between it happening again is different. I dont know which app

Still having this problem? I have the same thing happening. Called Google while still under warranty and they said it was because static builds up on the accelerometer and requires a soft reset. Turn the tablet off. Wait a few minutes. Press and hold the power button for 30+ seconds (let it cycle through turning on and off) and let it finish it's cycle to off after holding it for 30 seconds (thus the +). Power it back on and it should be fixed.

I still have to do this every day or so, so it is not a complete fix. I notice it locks up sitting in my case and stays fixed longer if I wipe out the inside of the case and back of the tablet with someone damp (attempting to remove any lingering static).

I removed my covet and the rotate still doesn't work, even temporary work, should I just sent it in? I sent it in before and I got it around January 2014 so Is it still under warranty.

Use cleanmaster clean junk clear ram...

Settings>accessibility>Untick Auto rotate>restart, Wait 5 minutes turn back on then tick the auto rotate in settings.

Have had that problem for almost 3 months. Found a quick fix for the issue. If you power off your n7 and press hard on the back around the "n" and "s" on the nexus logo, it will put the connector inside the tablet and the screen will rotate again. Unfortunately, this is only a short term solution and may require you to do so over and over again. I googled and found a complete fix on YouTube. This fix will permanently work, however it will require you to tale the back off your tablet. Here is the video:

I did this last Friday and it's still working!

Mine started after lollipop update, would rotate after a lag and then stayed in portrait. But I read a post above and went into accessibility setting unticked auto rotate, rebooted and waited like 5 minutes. Went back to accessibility settings and ticked the auto rotate and now it works again!!! THANKS Isaac from post #20!!!!!!

I am not sure you will like my answer
but the only things that solve it was to hold the tablet in both hands and band it a bit
just a bit, dont break anything
it immediately released the accelerometer sensor

    Hope it helps,
