Why is i that my direct from Samsung Note 10+ has the December Security update but my direct from Google Pixel 4XL does not?
I mean it's not like it'll be like this every month. I believe this month they are including some additional fixes. Otherwise it'll be first Monday of every month. You can't say the same about Samsung and that too for Samsung depends on region, carrier and what not.

People are making a big deal of one month, few particular model/region/version of Samsung phone getting security update faster. I also have the unlocked Note 10 and got the update on December 1st, but I have owned every Samsung phone to know that the general norm is.

There are only 2 phones that's guaranteed security update every month. Pixel and Essential phone.

While true, this is two months in a row out of two for delayed security updates. Samsung has been ahead those two months, but history shows how this will likely return to the normal next month or so.

How many Samsung models received the December update? Heck even all the Note 10 variants have not got the December update. Can't believe people are arguing about Pixel security update frequency with million different phone versions Samsung has out in the world.

Lol...well you seem to be more upset about this turn of events than anyone else.

I just wonder why Samsung phones are getting security updates sooner than the company that makes Android.
I mean it's already the 9th and my P4XL still doesn't have the December security update.

We'll see if Samsung can keep this up or maybe this was just a 2 month in a row anamoly.

Because google already released the security patches first Monday of the month for other pixel phones like usual and told they need additional week for pixel 4. It’s not like they haven’t said anything.

“Hello Pixel Community,

We have provided Android/Pixel security updates for December 2019. All supported Pixel devices running Android 10 will receive these software updates as part of the December 2019 OTA, which begins rolling out to some users today. We encourage you to check your Android version and update to receive the latest features.

*Pixel 4 (XL) will start receiving the update next week”

How many Samsung models you can say a particular date every month gets the update? It’s not even consistent for different versions of the same model forget about across all their phones. I'm happy that I got the December update on my unlocked Note 10 and definitely they have improved a lot this year compared to how it was before for the US unlocked model.

If you think about it...

The November Pixel 4 update was delayed. I received mine on November 11th.

If I receive the December update in the next couple of days, one could say I am getting "monthly" security updates.

Perspective.

Perspective.

This.

This update is going to bring a fair number of new features with it, some of which sound pretty cool. And the more code changes, the higher risk that you break something. So to reduce the chances of releasing an update that works something (ala Apple), maybe the delay was to make sure it was ready for prime time.

But perspective... We're pearl-clutching over a week or so delay... We'll get it, and then another next month, and the month after that... Until late 2022. Users of damn near every other OEM would love to have this problem.

Its 12/09 and my P4XL still does not have the December patch that was announced on 12/01 and released by Google on 12/05

But releasing it and distributing it to the phones are 2 different things it seems now huh? Listen...I'm not touting Samsung here...they have had a pretty shoddy recond in the past surrounding security updates.
But if they can update their phones on the same day Google releases the update....why can't Google??

I would bet Samsung has to get the update out to more phones than Google as well.
We should expect more from from Google here and not let them off the hook so to speak.
They should be bale to release the update and have it available on the same day.

Because the 4xl is also being a feature drop.

So does this "feature drop" come with the security update, or is it different? Looks like some pretty good features as well.

Google plans to start regularly releasing “feature drops” for its Pixel phones, bringing a number of new features to its phones all at once. The first starts rolling out today with a number of updates, including robocall screening and new portrait mode features. There’s also a memory management update that might be a big deal for Pixel 3 owners who have long complained about how the phone handles multitasking.

Perhaps the standout update is an automatic robocall screening feature that’s exclusive to Pixel 4 owners. Google’s phones already have a feature that lets you manually screen calls using its voice assistant, but the feature is now being updated to automatically decline detected robocalls. It looks like the feature will also start automatically screening calls from unknown numbers, then ringing once it has an initial transcript from the person calling. That choice might be a little more controversial than simply swatting away spam, so hopefully Google offers some options on how you want it to work.

Google Photos is also getting a pretty notable portrait mode update: the app can now apply a portrait mode effect to seemingly any photo of a person, even if you never enabled portrait mode while shooting. We’ll have to see just how good that effect turns out since it’s all being done with AI, rather than actual depth data. But there’s no reason Google can’t deliver something as entirely adequate as a typical portrait mode shot with this method, given how filtered they already look.

As part of the “feature drop,” Google is also announcing new video framing effects and quality improvements for Duo video chats, highlighting the expansion of the Recorder app to the Pixel 2, 3, and 3A, Live Caption to the 3 and 3A, and rolling out some Digital Wellbeing updates.

Google also says it’s updating “memory management” on all Pixel devices. Pixel phones will now “proactively compress” background apps, supposedly leading to multitasking improvements. Google says the feature allows Pixels to “run multiple applications at the same time -- like games, streaming content and more,” which is kind of confusing because that is how all smartphones work and a thing Pixels are currently capable of doing... just not very well in all cases.

The Pixel 3, in particular, has been criticized by owners for being overly aggressive about shutting down apps in the background. Google has previously released updates to tweak how the phone handles memory management, but there’s only so much Google can do with the device’s 4GB of RAM.

Google doesn’t say how often feature drops will come along, but it says they’ll be a regular event. The new features are rolling out now and are supposed to hit all phones they’re offered on within “the coming weeks.”

It's kinda what I like with the pixels! It's always interesting to see what new things are implemented and the improvements and changes that are made. Hopefully it's not gonna break something in the process

Have a lot of issues with trusted places not keeping the phone unlocked when I am at home. Maybe there is going to be a fix for that
