Pixel and SMS backup

When I set up my pixel the first time I was pleased to see that my sms messages were transferred. Does anyone know whether this means Google is now backing up sms routinely (like Apple does with iMessage or Google does with Hangouts)? Were I to do a FDR, would my sms messages in Messenger be restored upon setting up the phone again? I've been using a third-party app to do this, but it would be nice to let Google take care of it. Thanks.

It seem Google did provide back up for SMS, but it stated that "Not all apps back up automatically, especially older and non-Google apps."

So I guess that it might only provide backup if you are using stock Google messenger or any other Google apps.

How did u setup ur device? Using Tap feature from ur old phone?
What messaging app do u use?

Using Messenger. That link in the previous post seems to imply that this "newer" Google app will indeed backup SMS. Fingers crossed.
