Camera Shot in Low Light

I recently took a photo of my puppy in my living room and it came out looking darker than it really was in the room.
Should I have used the Night Shot mode instead?

Also, I noticed this photo looks even darker when I view it in the Photos app. I can barely see my dog. I even tried turning my screen brightness all the way up.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Phone cameras in general suffer more indoors with low light than outdoors. I try to use the flash indoors. If I know it's going to be needed I set it to always on so the camera can adjust the white balance with the flash light already on the scene I'm shooting, much like red-eye reduction works.
