Question about factory resetting the phone...

Okay, here's the situation:

On 8/31, my mom and I are combining our Sprint plans onto one shared plan, getting the Epic 4G, which I will have transferred from her number to mine, and she will get my HTC Hero.

I know there's a 24-hour period (I'm going through Best Buy to get the phone) to transfer numbers.

So, I'm going to do a factory reset on the phone. The question is, when? Should I do it right before 8/31? Will it erase my phone number on the phone if I do it early, like tomorrow (for example)? Or does it just kinda do a "System Restore" and make everything that's not on your SD card like it just came out of the box?

It get restored to out of box condition, it will retain the phone #, so you can wipe it anytime.
