I found a thread talking about this on XDA, but curiously, not here.
I just picked up an HTC One, I noticed some scuffing so I had to exchange it, both phones exhibited this issue. I noticed the screen had very faint diagonal lines going across the whole screen at a 45 degree angle (lower left to upper right in portrait). I've determined that it's the digitizer that is visible, and it appears most prevalent on light colors. I have a friend who has a Sprint HTC One and I can see it on his phone too (so can he). Also, both my ONE's had a couple dead pixels...
I had this same issue with 3 DROID DNA's before I realized it was the digitizer and was going to be on all of them...and returned it because of it.
Its less noticeable on the ONE but definitely going to return it and wait for the G2.
To get an idea what it looks like, it looks similar to the Steam icon background:
