Group texts converting to MMS. Is this HTC specific??

HTC One M8 and it keeps converting back to MMS. Messages aren't over 160 characters and people keep asking if I sent an attachment?

Some messaging apps allow you to turn off Group Texting via MMS. In this situation, I think it might just send the same message to each person in the group as individual SMS messages, such that the group won't be able to see other people's replies.
