Not sure if I am overlooking something. I have root on my Sprint Optimus S thru Gingersnap. I think I have flashed a custom recovery but every time I boot into recovery I get a black screen. I assume the custom recovery is working I just can not see it. I wait about 20 minutes just to see what the phone does and nothing. I press the menu key and it just boots up normally.

Can someone direct me to to a walk thru so I can research this a little more. Do I need a different custom recovery or is there a fix?

Just trying to flash ThundeROM-V1.8.3
Flashed /// recovery-RA-GNM-thunderc-s-1.1.0.img and /// flash_image

You have a custom recovery. It is an older one that doesn't have the LCD drivers for your phone (LG changed the LCD component about half-way through the production cycle) All the commands work, the buttons, etc. You just get no visual feedback.

Install xionia recovery and life will be easier.

Unzip this file onto the top level directory of your *sdcard*

Minimal download for Recoveries and Installers (unpack to SD card)

It is from the Reference section of the ZVH rooting thread.

Then in "adb shell" or "terminal" type (do not type the $ or # symbols):
$ su
# cd /sdcard/000root
# /system/bin/sh install-xionia.sh
# exit
$ exit
